What went into making Peaches: Moving On
The journey began in early 2025, when I completed writing the songs that I’d been working on for this second album. I write both lyrics and melody, recording my ideas on my phone to start with. I also type the lyrics onto my PC and sing into a piece of computer software called “Audacity”. I have microphone, stand and pop shield, record my lyrics into Audacity and send WAV files to my producer, James Hawkins. We work on them and re-record until each song is fully formed.
Together, we figured out from my early demo recordings which keys, rhythms and tempo we could use for each song. Then James set out some ideas for instrumentation, developing them until he was ready to take the music to the recording studio.
For me, it’s a real pleasure to then work with the wonderful musicians who play my music! What a thrill! We went to Oastview Studio in Marden in the heart of Kent last summer with a full band to record each track. It’s an intense but very rewarding process to hear the songs start to come to life.
Then there’s an extensive process of editing the recordings, adding extra sounds and instruments to the songs that are needed afterwards. James also worked with me closely in his studio in Kingston to record and fine-tune my vocals and record backing vocals. Through all this time I was enduring and persevering through Long Covid, but music is such a salve, I managed it!
The mixing process comes next, and my part was to listen and feedback on the different versions. Each of the songs deserved different treatment, as there is such a variety of styles in my music. I’m thrilled with the way they turned out.
Last, but not least, I want to pay tribute to my Producer, James Hawkins, and his incredible work.
James has great knowledge and skills and the ability to work well with musicians, technicians and singer-songwriters. It’s always a pleasure to work with him.
Thank you for everything, James.
"Your songs and voice are pure and true. I wish you every success with your gift."
Fran Raya (singer-songwriter)
"I listened to a selection of your tracks on YT, and my trusty "she's got me" detectors (lump in throat and moist eyes...) kicked in within @ 30 seconds :). You have a very soft and distinct, lilting voice, Jan, and it's great that you (and I) are still able sing sweetly at our time of our lives. In fact, I know a lot of singers that I have worked with in the past, who are no longer able to do so, for one reason or another. Keep up the great work!"
Dennis Burns (singer-songwriter and recording artist)
